Well Child Care
Children’s wellness visits to the pediatrician are important for monitoring the child’s growth and overall development. The American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) recommends a schedule designed to maximize the benefits for each child. During the first year, it is vital for you and your pediatrician to monitor the development and health of your newborn. Beginning with an exam at 3 to 5 days old, you and your pediatrician should develop a schedule of wellness visits appropriate to you and your child. The AAP recommends visits during month 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12 for the first year. Schedules for year two and beyond are spaced farther apart but are frequent enough to ensure your child’s health is carefully tracked. These visits are focused on providing the following:
- illness and accident prevention,
- monitoring growth and development, and
- answering questions and discussing areas of concern.
Illness and Accident Prevention
Your pediatrician will discuss immunizations as well as home safety and proper diet and exercise. Wellness visits are a good time to ask questions or discuss any care issues or concerns you may have. Check out our section on vaccinations elsewhere on this website for more detailed information.
The doctor or nurse can demonstrate proper care and feeding techniques, discuss diet, and developmental progress and issues. These visits are essential for your child. Maintaining a close relationship with the professional team at Sunrise Pediatrics can give you confidence your child is on the right path to health.
Monitoring Growth and Development
The early years can be a time to watch and relish the growth and advancement of your child. At each wellness visit, the doctor will monitor the physical and mental development of your child and will be available to discuss any concerns you may have. During these visits, the doctor will check your child’s heartbeat, breathing, stomach, reflexes, temperature, and other vital signs. Blood test are sometimes scheduled as are other tests such as x-rays or scans. Children grow, change, and mature at different rates, and your doctor is a wealth of information for you and a valuable health resource for your child. Your doctor will explain any issues he or she notices as well as demonstrate healthy practices to employ at home.
Answering Questions or Discussing Areas of Concern
During the time between visits, it’s recommended that you make a list of questions or issues you observe or that come up. Bring this list with you to your next visit. Answers to your questions are important for your child. These discussions with your doctor and the professional staff help ensure you are comfortable with your experience at Sunrise and with your child’s progress. Wellness visits are an excellent time to discuss issues such as formulas, breastfeeding, proper diet at different ages, preparing for pre-school, vaccinations, fluoride in diet, physical and mental development, and any other issues or concerns.
